IMQ Prevención takes advantage of iSen and its ergonomics analysis functionality

IMQ Prevención, in cooperation with STT Systems, has recently started a new and innovative ergonomic measurement method. IMQ Prevención studies the risks that come from physical load and its causes: activities related to manual cargo handling, repetitive movements or poor body posture.

STT’s inertial sensors and iSen System provide real-time orientations (angles) as well as angular velocities and accelerations. They communicate wirelessly using Wi-Fi (STT-IWS), which means that they can easily transfer data to any Windows computer.

By using these capabilities and cooperating with workers from CIE Orbelan, the group of analysts from IMQ Prevención were able to take accurate measurementes of the working cycle.

The IMUs were fixed to the worker’s body and captured every movement during working cycle. At the same time, analysts from IMQ Prevención filmed every movement with a video camera. Once the recording is over, the data can be downloaded into iSen software for visualization and biomechanical analysis, with a 3D recreation of the worker’s motion. The video filmed can be easily introduced and synchronized with the 3D recreation. Creating events (such us worker’s specific movements) and reports is straightforward. Just one application among many for offline motion capture and analysis!

iSen y los sensores inerciales llegan a las Escuelas Universitarias Gimbernat

La Escuela de Fisioterapia de las Escuelas Universitarias Gimbernat, en el campus de Torrelavega, ha comenzado a usar sus nuevos sensores inerciales STT-IWS y el sistema iSen.

El Sistema iSen emplea los sensores inerciales STT-IWS que proveen de ángulos en tiempo real así como velocidades angulares y aceleraciones. Se comunican de forma inalámbrica mediante Wi-Fi, por lo que pueden transferir información a cualquier ordenador con sistema operativo Windows. El sistema iSen consta de un número variable tanto de sensores inerciales así como de paquetes de software para analizar los resultados.

Los sensores inerciales y iSen son idóneos para sesiones al aire libre, donde instalaciones fijas no son factibles, o para lugares donde las oclusiones suponen un problema. STT Systems ha provisto a la Escuela de Fisioterapia de las Escuelas Universitarias de Gimbernat de un paquete de software completo con representación 3D y análisis biomecánico de cuerpo completo en tiempo real, incluyendo una amplia gama de modelos biomecánicos y herramientas de análisis.

En resumen, los sensores inerciales y el sistema iSen suponen una herramienta versátil. Aplicable a distintos ámbitos como la educación, la investigación y la práctica clínica.

Tennis analysis with iSen

Tennis is a popular sport in many places and it is considered a highly technical discipline. Success requires a mix of player talent, good coaching, appropriate instruments or equipment and an understanding of certain aspects of sport science.

Biomechanics is a key area in player development because all strokes have a fundamental mechanical structure and sports injuries primarily have a mechanical cause.

How can a professional coach assess a player’s performance with precision? How can a coach keep track of a player’s technical evolution over time?

iSen is very good at open-field body tracking, and that is why the Institut Daniel Mayral and Teknon Hospital (both based in Barcelona) chose STT’s inertial measurement software. With only a few sensors they were able to set up different tests and tracked several gestures including arms and lower body. Protocol configuration and Report customization prove to be a fundamental tool, as they allow the users to easily get meaningful conclusions instead of tons of data. The work continues as they keep analysing moves and strokes.

On March 21st and 22nd the course “Recent advances in biomechanical analysis systems” was held at Casa Valencia (Barcelona), with the participation of Dr. Virginia Novel Martí (Professor Emeritus, University of Barcelona), faculty of the Department of Podiatry (UB) and STT Systems.

Los días 20 y 21 de marzo se realizó en la Casa Valencia (Barcelona) el curso “Últimos avances en sistemas de análisis biomecánicos”, con la participación de la Dra. Virginia Novel Martí (Profesora Emérita de la Universidad de Barcelona), del profesorado del Departamento de Podología de la UB y de STT Systems.

iSen and CLIMA in Singapore

Researchers at the National University of Singapore are using iSen for different studies. One of them involves a project with Nanyang Technological University, where a team is developing an upper limb stroke rehabilitation device which integrates mind and body to accelerate functional recovery. One component of this is the EMG sensor arm glove. They intend to mount inertial sensors on this arm glove and integrate iSen software into their existing rehab protocol, as a real-time/offline evaluation tool. They are in the process of commercializing this project and the system is under patient trials at the moment in the National University Hospital (NUH). Additional interests include the lower body system (7 sensors) for their ageing study in NUH.

On the other hand, researchers at the Nanyang Polytechnic of Singapore are currently using STT’s optical motion systems in several fields of study. Particularly, a 12-camera Clinical 3DMA system was installed to carry out gait analysis tests including a force plate to acquire the information on ground reaction.
