He is also passionate about biomechanics and uploads video tutorials related to cycling analysis on his YouTube channel. In this post, we present some examples Pedro has shared using the 3DMA tool.

Cycling Biomechanics – Motor Cost Theory

Motor cost theory indicates that, to reduce joint moments at the hip, knee, and ankle, it is beneficial for the pedal to be slightly tilted at peak torque (crank 90–110°), so that the line of force passes closer to all joints.

The shoe’s sole drop or angulation helps with this, as completely flat shoes would require much more ankle dorsiflexion to orient the pedal correctly.
