Technology and Devices for Optical Motion Capture

In a previous article, we defined what motion analysis is and outlined the different types available. In this article, we will focus on the technology and devices used to carry out such analysis.

Motion Capture Devices for Sport and Human Studies

When performing motion capture, there is a wide range of devices available that enable highly precise biomechanical analysis.

All of them share similar technical features, including a unified motion capture engine and a biomechanics module. However, depending on the type of study being conducted, specific applications must be designed to adapt the system to particular requirements.

Whether the goal is to perform 2D or 3D motion capture will determine the level of technological complexity and the range of devices required.

What Devices Are Used for Motion Capture?

As mentioned, the technology and equipment used are largely defined by the activity being assessed. Based on this premise, the following elements are required to conduct a comprehensive study.

Motion Capture Cameras and Accessories

Depending on the analysis to be performed, different camera configurations are available, allowing each study to be tailored accordingly.
This includes adjustable resolution, frames per second, LED intensity controls, and the maximum number of cameras in operation, all aligned with the specific needs of each case.

Wall Mounts or Tripods for Cameras

Depending on the objectives of the study, adequate physical space (in square metres) and sufficient tripods will be required to cover the area of movement being analysed.

Calibration Tools

Using precise calibration tools ensures tracking with a minimal margin of error.

High-Performance Computer

Such powerful technology requires a computer capable of processing the large volumes of data generated during analysis.

Force Platforms and Virtual Reality Headsets

Force platforms provide highly valuable data and are widely used across numerous sports disciplines. Virtual reality headsets help immerse the athlete by simulating real competitive scenarios.

Markers and Tracking Accessories

A range of reflective markers and tracking accessories is available, offering marker tracking accuracy with an error margin of less than 1 mm.

Which Sports Can Be Analysed Using Motion Analysis Tools?

We develop advanced systems to facilitate motion analysis in running, cycling, golf, and any sporting activity where body posture plays a critical role in athletic performance and results.

3D Cycling Analysis

Technology for Cycling Biomechanics Studies
We monitor the cyclist’s body within a single recording to conduct a biomechanical assessment, correct postural errors, and carry out what is commonly known as bike fitting or bicycle adjustment.

Runner Analysis – Running

Running 3DMA is a full-body 3D motion analysis tool specifically developed to perform detailed running and biomechanical assessments of the runner.

Studies for Other Disciplines

3DMA technology is also used to conduct full-body 3D biomechanical studies in a matter of minutes, delivering instant results along with time-based graphs, reports, and statistical outputs.
